Phoenix Film Reviews: In the Lost Lands

Paul W. S. Anderson’s latest film In the Lost Lands hits Irish cinemas today. Dáire Walsh from the Phoenix Film team shares his thoughts on the movie below.

Dáire’s review
From the latest collaboration between director Paul W. S. Anderson and actress Milla Jovovich, most well known for their series of Resident Evil films, comes In the Lost Lands. Based on the short stories of the same name by George R. R. Martin we follow Boyce (Dave Bautista) and Gray Alys (Jovovich) as the travel through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With an empire in a state of unrest and threats around every corner, our leads try to make it to through the desolate world by the next full moon.

Unfortunately the movie isn’t able to match the ambitious scope and scale of this tale, with multiple warring factions vying for control and a long unexplored history which got us to the point of a teetering kingdom and a chaotic world beyond its walls. The visual effects too try swing big with large Dune-inspired vistas that didn’t get enough time in the oven and lens flares put on every single light source, leaving the audience distracted by the visual noise more often than not.

This all then culminates in a movie packed with clichés, redundant exposition and a twist that could work in a short stories but certainly can’t hold a feature on its own.
