Phoenix Film Reviews: G20

Viola Davis stars in Amazon Prime Video’s latest film G20, released today. The EGOT winner, who previously played Michelle Obama in 2022’s The First Lady, now takes on the role of the POTUS herself – albeit fictionalised – as a G20 summit is hijacked by terrorists. Dáire attended an advance screening of the film and shares his thoughts below.

Dáire’s Review

Hollywood’s latest Die Hard has arrived, starring Viola Davis as US President Danielle Sutton who is in Cape Town for her first G20 summit and Anthony Star as a soldier-turned-terrorist who takes world leaders hostage. With the host hotel and surrounding area blocked off from any emergency services or aid, the American president will have to break the siege from within.

A respectable supporting cast includes Anthony Anderson, the First Gentleman, and Ramon Rodriguez, the President’s bodyguard, who entertain while on screen. The film also has its moments of interesting action and engaging tension.

It’s no surprise that our protagonist and antagonist shine, especially when we get to see them face off directly. Unfortunately, while there are some enjoyable periods, set pieces and jokes, much of the movie is formulaic and predictable, at times feeling like the distilled essence of “second screen watching”. Having only a few characters that don’t serve a single simple function, the movie acts as a basic popcorn flick.

If you are looking for Air Force One with a light feminist angle, you might consider watching this film.

G20 is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video
